Richard Morris Hunt (1827–1895) was the first American to study architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris’ renowned art academy. Hunt specialized in designing opulent houses and large public buildings. He gained an unequalled reputation among American architects for working with sculptors, especially in the design of bases for public monuments.
